Arakkal Pooram Myth and Legend

Local devotees hold the belief that the temple, which belongs to the “Mukaya” community residing predominantly in Madappally and Korapuzha in Kozhikode District, is approximately 700 years old. Despite being a community temple, people of all backgrounds, regardless of religion, caste, or creed, participate and collaborate in the various festivals celebrated here. The temple also features a Lotus Pond located near the sea, which is noteworthy because even though it is only 30 meters away from the sea, the water in it is entirely free from salt, and numerous lotus flowers blossom annually.

The main deity of the temple is “Amma” Bhagavathy, and her daughter “Makal” Bhagavathy also has a separate temple. Additionally, there are individual shrines for Daivathan, Kshethrapalan, Gulikan, and Vishnumoorthy, among others. The fishing community devotees strongly believe that they receive protection from the turbulent seas and harsh weather and are blessed with wealth through the grace of the Goddess, referred to as “Katalamma.” The Kshethram Uralanmar, commonly known as Velichappadan and Karanavan, conduct various rituals such as Pooja, Nivedyam, Archana, and more. The most significant festival celebrated at the temple is Pooram.
