Orkatteri

Orkatteri is a small town located in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India. It serves as the center for the Eramala grama panchayath and is home to a strong agricultural sector. The main crops grown in the area are coconuts and arecanuts, while rice cultivation has declined due to the conversion of paddy fields into residential and commercial areas.

Temples and Masjids in Orkatteri

Orkkatteri is home to two temples: one dedicated to Shiva and the other to Devi. There is also an Ayyappa Temple located opposite the Shiva Temple. In the nearby Manapuram area, there is a recently renovated temple called Chattukulathamma, which is connected to the myths surrounding the Orkatteri Devi Temple. Other temples in the area include the Edathil Temple, Thacholi Temple, Paroli illam Temple, and Koomully Temple. The town of Orkkatteri also has two Juma Masjids (old and new) as well as the Maljaul Masakeen Yatheem Khana (M M Orphanage).

Orkkateri Kannukali Chantha, also known as the Orkkatteri Thalappoli, is a famous festival in the Malabar region of India. It takes place annually for four days, starting on the 12th of Makaram (January), and involves participation from people of all castes and communities. The festival is connected to the festivals of the two temples in the area. Along with this, a host of cultural and entertainment events are conducted. Back in the day, it was the most crowded fair in the entire revenue district.

Orkkatteri village is located in Kozhikode district and can be accessed through Vatakara city to the west and Kuttiady town to the east. National Highway 66, which runs through Vatakara, connects the village to Mangalore, Goa, Mumbai to the north and Cochin, and Trivandrum to the south. The eastern Highway through Kuttiady connects Orkkatteri to Mananthavady, Mysore, and Bangalore. The nearest airports are Kannur and Kozhikode, and the nearest railway station is Vatakara.
